The synagogue
was built in the Gothic-
Renaissance style at the end of the 17
th
century. Our attention is drawn to the
Baroque-Classicist stone portal, perhaps from
the second half of the 18 th century, with a
wrought-iron door, on which a Hebrew inscription
dates from 1812. In the middle of the 19
th
century the Jewish community numbered over
1,100 inhabitants, a number too high for the Old
Synagogue to accommodate, and thus a new one
was bulit. When the New Synagogue opened, the old one was used
as a warehouse. It has served as a gallery since 1996.
2. Hälfte des 18. Jh.s stammt, und eine Schmiedetür. Die hebräische
Innschrift datiert sie ins Jahr 1812. In der
Hälfte des 19. Jh. s. hatte die
Judengemeinde über 1100
Bewohner und die alte Synagoge
konnte nicht so viel Gläubige
aufnehmen, deshalb wurde
die neue gebaut. Die alte
wurde dann als Lager
ausgenutzt und seit 1996
dient sie als Galerie.

The New Synagogue was built in the Neo-Gothic style in
1868–1870. It was designed by a Viennese architect named
Augustin Prokop and built on the spot where two Christian houses
used to be, outside the boundaries of the former Jewish ghetto.
Its windows were ornamented with coloured stained glass with
a symbol of the Star of David, and Hebrewquotations were inscribed
in two stripes of plaster above the entrance. The synagogue served
its purpose until 1940 when it was damaged by Nazi vandals. From
1943 it was used as a warehouse and since the 1990s it has been
rented by the Jewish community for commercial purposes.
