Venerable Velké Meziříčí, also popularly known as “Medřič” or “Velmez”,
is among Moravia’smore important towns and is located in the
southeastern part of the Vysočina (or “Highland”) District. The town
arose in the picturesque valley where the Balinka and Oslava Rivers
merge. The first documented evidence of its existence dates from1281.
Its location and its elevation of 425–480 meters above sea-level
places it in the foothills of the Czech-Moravian Highlands. It stretches
across an area of 4,000 hectares and is located near the D1motorway
between Prague and Brno.
With a population of nearly 12,000 residents, the town also attracts
many visitors with its numerous historical monuments. The historical
center, the castle grounds and portions of the town’s outskirts have been
designated a protected historical zone.
The town offers opportunities for cultural, athletic and social
activity, and nature lovers are drawn to the natural beauty of the
surrounding area.
Die historische Stadt Velké Meziříčí (Groß Meseritsch),
manchmal auch „Medřič“ oder „Velmez“ gennant, gehört zu den
bedeutenden mährischen Städten im südöstlichen Teil der Region
Vysočina (Hochland). Die Stadt ist in dem malerischen Tal am
Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Balinka (Balliner Bach) und Oslava
(Oslawa) gewachsen – die erste urkundliche Erwähnung der Stadt
stammt aus dem Jahre 1281.
Die Stadt erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 4000 ha und
aufgrund seiner Lage und der Meereshöhe von 425–480 m.Ü. M.
bildet die Stadt das Vorgebirge der Böhmisch-Mährischen Höhe
(Českomoravská vrchovina). Die Stadt liegt in der unmittelbaren
Nähe der Autobahn D1 (Prag–Brünn).
Die Stadt mit knapp 12 000 Einwohnern fesselt Ihre
Aufmerksamkeit dank vieler Sehenswürdigkeiten – das historische
Zentrum der Stadt, dass Schlossareal und ein Teil der Vorstadt sind
zumStadtdenkmal ausgerufen worden.
Die Stadt bietet eine Vielzahl kultureller und sportlicher
Veranstaltungen und auch die Naturliebhaber finden in der
Umgebung der Stadt viele Naturschönheiten.
