Renaissance palace
– former Lutheran grammar school
(house no. 11)
This Renaissance palace with an arcaded courtyard was built to house
the Latin Lutheran academy, founded by Alina Meziříčská of Lomnice. The
building was completed in 1578 and was inspired by the Palazzo Pompei in
Verona. Members of prominent noble families of the period studied at the
Lutheran academy. From the beginning of the 16th century the grammar
schools, or gymnasia, were Latin schools where students were prepared
for university study. In the middle of the 17th century the building
was converted to serve as the manorial brewery, which remained until
the middle of the 20th century. Since then it has been the location of the Basic
Art School and the municipal library. The surface of the building is covered
with graffito in a simple cube pattern.

Der Renaissancepalast mit dem inneren Arkadenhof wurde als Sitz der
lateinischen lutherischen Akademie gebaut. Die Gründerin war Frau Alina
Meziříčská von Lomnice. Der Bau, inspiriert durch Palazzo
Pompei in Verona, wurde 1578 fertig gestellt. In der
lutherischen Akademie studierten bedeutende
Adelige der damaligen Zeit. Gymnasien
waren seit Anfang des 17. Jh.s. lateinische,
katholisch geprägte Schulen, die für Studium
an der Universität vorbereiteten. In der
Mitte des 17. Jh.s. wurde das Gebäude zur
Herrenbrauerei umgebaut, die hier bis Mitte
des 20. Jh.s. stand. Danach befanden sich
hier die Kunstschule und die Stadtbibliothek.
Die ganze Fassade ist mit dem Sgraffito mit
